(Le) Poisson Rouge Internship-Marketing
WE ARE NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS!

OVERVIEW:
(Le) Poisson Rouge is an 1100-capacity music venue and multimedia art cabaret founded by musicians on the site of the historic Village Gate. We present concerts, multimedia events, special events and late-night programming in the flexible-use main space, which features acoustic engineering by the legendary John Storyk/WSDG (Electric Lady Studios, Jazz @ Lincoln Center). The adjoining Gallery is a fully functioning Art Exhibition space with quarterly installations, as well as an event and party space with diverse party bookings.

COMMITMENT:

* Candidates must be able to commit to minimum two 4-hr shifts per week for 3-6 months
* Flexible schedule between the hours of 1pm-6pm
* Attendance and participation at planning meetings

QUALIFICATIONS:

* Proficient in MS Office Suite and internet research/social media
* Excellent interpersonal and general communication skills
* Excellent time management skills and an intuitive self-starter
* Familiarity with the arts and local cultural resources ranging from classic to cutting-edge
* Mature and discreet conduct in a fast-paced, high-profile environment
* Experience working with diverse cultural and lifestyle demographics

PROJECTS & DUTIES:
LPR accepts 5 Interns per semester. The scope of each intern's responsibilities is tailored to match the ability and interests of the successful candidates, but will fall in to the general category of Marketing & Promotions. The LPR Internship program emphasizes general knowledge acquisition, but each student will be entrusted with the direct management of projects. Expected duties may include the following:

o Maintain press archives and produce weekly internal news briefs
o Maintain internal marketing and informational displays
o Update LPR viral networking applications (social media)
o Assist with production and dissemination of press releases, marketing materials, mailings, and newsletters
o Assist with graphic design fulfillment and scheduling
o Complete a semester long marketing project/plan

In 1990, a 17-year-old Inbal Segev left her native Israel to come to the U.S. to study at Yale University with the famed cello pedagogue Aldo Parisot. She went on to further studies at Juilliard and has been a New Yorker ever since, having settled on the Upper West Side with her husband and three children.

Yet Segev admits that there’s always been a side of her that feels like an expat and her eclectic musical tastes reflect that accordingly. In the WQXR Café she applied her 1673 Francesco Ruggeri cello to a suite of Celtic folk tunes, bringing out the hypnotic, insistent drone that one normally hears in bagpipe melodies. “I’m a pretty conservative player,” Segev admits. “But I like to explore new things and I like to use new elements and give new breath to old programs.”

Segev’s global inspirations go further. She has performed frequently with Fernando Otero, an Argentinian pianist and composer who won a Latin Grammy Award recently, and who is currently writing a “tango-infused” cello concerto for her. He'll join her to perform several of his own pieces in a recital at Le Poisson Rouge on June 1.

Hopefully by now you’ve heard Smother, the third album from Wild Beasts. As with all their records, it feels like it comes out of nowhere. And as always, I have trouble finding reference points to give people when recommending them (Antony? Talking Heads?). That’s why I asked the band to talk about some of the albums and songs they listened to while writing and recording it, as well as some of the bands that inspired them when they started. Bassist/vocalist Tom Fleming created this list on behalf of Wild Beasts, though it includes some “personal indulgences” that he wanted to talk about. “We just share records on tour. We trade tapes, as it were. And we don’t really have set roles anymore. We’re all interested in production and how things are put together. We all play more than one instrument now-a-days,” he says. “So it’s more about, how can we best use what we’ve got.” Though his list of picks is pretty diverse, they make sense: they’re songs with lots of complex rhythms, or with a muted subtlety that nevertheless burrow into you lyrically — “turning the knife” is the phrase he uses to describe the lyrics on Smother.

Favorite Providence noise rock duo Lightning Bolt jolted the crowd into an ecstatic epilepsy at Le Poisson Rouge on Thursday night with opening act Pterodactyl, making sounds that can only described as what Thor, God of Thunder, might make in the midst of a bad trip: hyper-rhythmic hammering, spectral moaning, and carnivorous screams. We thoroughly missed the gravitational pull of Lightning Bolt’s older performances when they would pop up guerilla-style within the crowd. Nonetheless, the interior of Le Poisson Rouge suited them with both singer and drummer Brian Chippendale and bassist Brian Gibson loosely mottled in neon colors and drenched in the venue’s subterranean glow.

Customary to their shows, Chippendale wore one of his many face masks (this one having the air of a vigilante hobo) that also housed his crude, vocal mic. As a drummer, he was unrelenting in the best sense possible, like an hour of torrential hail on a tin roof. The stoic-faced Gibson, meanwhile, poured on fuzzy beats and distortion as if it was his native tongue. Also, customary to their shows, they were loud, really, really loud. Did we mention they were loud?

The old cliché is "a bolt from the blue." Pianist Kirill Gerstein's struck in an Atlanta hotel bar.

Pianists have no idea they're even being considered for the Gilmore Artist Award. A team of piano experts put together by the Gilmore Keyboard Festival of Kalamazoo, Mich. secretly attends concerts around the world. They listen, they assess, they debate, they listen some more. And once every four years, they give their top honor to an up-and-coming pianist who is, in the Festival's words, "a profound musician" with "charisma and breadth of musicianship," someone who "desires and can sustain" an international career and who "can make a real impact on music."

Last winter, Gerstein was getting ready for a concert in Atlanta. He got word that a critic from Houston wanted to meet for an interview in the hotel bar. It seemed a bit bizarre, but Gerstein agreed — what developing artist can't use a nice write-up? He went to the bar, where there was no critic from Houston. A man with a half-smile handed him an envelope and said: "You're it."

About Axiom
The newest addition to Juilliard’s roster of performing ensembles is AXIOM, which was formed by student initiative in 2005. This new chamber ensemble is dedicated to performing the masterworks of the 20th-century repertoire. AXIOM is comprised of a flexible roster of current Juilliard students and recent graduates who, in addition to performing, assist in the organizational and administrative needs of the ensemble. In February, 2006, James Conlon conducted the ensemble’s debut performance in Avery Fisher Hall featuring the music of Schoenberg and Debussy. AXIOM was the featured instrumental ensemble for the Alice Tully Vocal Arts Debut Recital, performing Luciano Berio’s Folk Songs with Soprano Sarah Wolfson and the world premiere of Josef Bardanashvili’s Three Scenes with Soprano Raquela Sheeran.

In addition, for two seasons the AXIOM Ensemble has been selected to collaborate with the world-renowned Juilliard Dance Division as part of their “Spring Dances at Juilliard” performances, featuring Bohuslav Martinu’s Field Mass and David Lang’s Increase and This Was Written By Hand in March 2007, and Copland’s Appalachian Spring, Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder, and Dello Joio’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Meditations on Ecclesiastes in March 2008. Steve Lehman, a quietly dazzling saxophonist, is the stylistic progeny of at least two imposing modern-jazz masters, Anthony Braxton and Jackie McLean. In a string of potent albums he has shown a proclivity for intense improvisation, a taste for rhythmic entanglements with pianists and drummers, and a penchant for surrounding himself with like-minded performers. So the music Mr. Lehman makes must be jazz, right?

Not so fast. Mr. Lehman, a doctoral candidate in composition at Columbia University, is also a resourceful creator of intricately detailed contemporary classical concert works, some of which show the influence of teachers like Tristan Murail and Alvin Lucier. One, “Impossible Flow,” had its premiere during a concert by the International Contemporary Ensemble at Le Poisson Rouge on Tuesday evening, as part of the ensemble’s ICELab series.

Unlike many jazz-identified artists who have pursued formal composition as a distinguished sideline, Mr. Lehman, like Mr. Braxton, proposes a risky but intriguing syncretism. On “Travail, Transformation and Flow,” an astonishing album Mr. Lehman issued in 2009, you heard the sophisticated harmonic analysis of contemporary-classical spectralism fused to a killer rhythm section that played jagged beats derived from post-bop jazz, hip-hop and electronica.

That Mr. Lehman achieved a similar alchemy in “Impossible Flow,” commissioned jointly by the ensemble and the Manhattan New Music Project, was due partly to the performers’ improbable skill. It was a given that these musicians could handle complex harmonies and unpredictable rhythms; that they could improvise proficiently and make oblique figures swing was a small miracle.

I first heard the music of Son Lux (a.k.a. Ryan Lott) when he released his breathtaking debut, At War With Walls and Mazes, in 2008. Lott was unknown at the time, and his record — a startling mix of mangled hip-hop beats, cut-up string arrangements and fragments of field recordings — came out of nowhere like it was shot from a cannon.

In the years since, Lott has stayed busy with his day job writing music for modern dance companies and other creative projects at Butter Studios in New York. He's also been working on a new batch of Son Lux songs.

I wanted to talk to you about the acoustic element of your group, and how this came to happen... if there is a sort of purity in using all acoustic instruments.

I see it less in terms of purity and more in terms of clarity. The switch occurred for a number of reasons but I would say the major impetus was that the harmonies I write, which tend to be extremely specific, were getting lost with the electric band and turning into pure noise.

The harmonies within the instruments themselves?

Right-- the chords, chord progressions. I think there's a certain amount of baggage you have to carry no matter what kind of instrument you play and I think playing strange chords through a distorted electric guitar puts you squarely in the "RAWK" canon and I wanted to get as far as I could away from all that. The switch also stemmed from my frustration over what I perceived as the electric guitar's lack of tactility.

Which isn't to say that it's impossible to be expressive on the electric but the nylon-string guitar feels so much more tangible and physical to me, which fit in quite nicely with this notion of corporeality-- natural, body sounds-- I wanted to explore with the new record. Which brings us back to your initial question about the purity of acoustic instruments.

I wanted to ask you how you felt about composition? It seems like your work is very calculated.

Extremely calculated, almost to the point where I'm not thinking about the events within a song in musical terms anymore, haha. What about composition do you want to know how i feel?

Why choosing to compose instead of improvise?

There's that old adage about needing to make things come out perfectly in art because you can't in real life and I think that's quite applicable to my work. But to think of composition as this cold, austere activity where spontaneity isn't involved would be silly and wrong or to think of improv as this place where "anything goes" would be just as naive. I don't necessarily see the two as separate entities; there's certainly a lot of improvisation in composition and vice versa. I feel like similar rules apply in either medium, at least they would if I were improvising.

The non-pretentious, non-snarky answer would be that performing a piece of music that I've slaved over suits my temperament more than creating something on the spot in front of an audience.

OVERVIEW:
(Le) Poisson Rouge is an 1100-capacity music venue and multimedia art cabaret founded by musicians on the site of the historic Village Gate. We present concerts, multimedia events, special events and late-night programming in the flexible-use main space, which features acoustic engineering by the legendary John Storyk/WSDG (Electric Lady Studios, Jazz @ Lincoln Center). The adjoining Gallery is a fully functioning Art Exhibition space with quarterly installations, as well as an event and party space with diverse party bookings.

COMMITMENT:

* Candidates must be able to commit to minimum two 4-hr shifts per week for 3-6 months
* Flexible schedule between the hours of 1pm-6pm
* Attendance and participation at planning meetings

QUALIFICATIONS:

* Proficient in MS Office Suite and internet research
* Excellent interpersonal and general communication skills
* Excellent time management skills and an intuitive self-starter
* Familiarity with the arts and local cultural resources ranging from classic to cutting-edge
* Mature and discreet conduct in a fast-paced, high-profile environment

PROJECTS & DUTIES:
LPR accepts 5 Interns per semester. The scope of each intern's responsibilities is tailored to match the ability and interests of the successful candidates, but will fall in to the general category of Marketing & Promotions. The LPR Internship program emphasizes general knowledge acquisition, but each student will be entrusted with the direct management of projects. Expected duties may include the following:

o Maintain press archives and produce weekly internal news briefs
o Maintain internal marketing and informational displays
o Update LPR website and viral networking applications (MySpace, Facebook, etc)
o Assist with production and dissemination of press releases, marketing materials, mailings, and newsletters
o Assist with graphic design fulfillment and scheduling
o General office duties as required or assigned

On November 10, 2010 vibraphonist Andrei Pushkarev and pianist Andrius Zlabys celebrated the longevity of these two composers in a performance featuring works by Pärt, Kancheli and J.S. Bach.

(Le) Poisson Rouge is an 800-capacity multimedia art cabaret founded by musicians on the site of the historic Village Gate. We present concerts, dance and theater performances, film screenings, special events and late-night programming in the flexible-use main space, which features acoustic engineering by the legendary John Storyk/WSDG (Electric Lady Studios, Jazz @ Lincoln Center). The adjoining lounge is open at night as a secondary bar and event space. Bartenders report to the Managers and function as essential operations staff, responsible for exceptional customer service and strict quality control of food and beverage service.

COMMITMENT:

* Candidates must be able to commit 15-40 hours per week over 2-5 shifts
* Daytime, evening & weekend hours may be expected

QUALIFICATIONS:

* Preference given to candidates with minimum 2 years Bartending experience in a high-volume nightclub, venue, or lounge setting
* Proficient with the Aloha POS system; training available for the right candidates
* Commitment and enthusiasm for outstanding customer service and fine-dining service
* Excellent interpersonal communication skills and commitment to teamwork
* Familiarity with the arts and local cultural resources ranging from classic to cutting-edge
* Mature and discreet conduct in a fast-paced, high-profile environment
* Understanding of general bar operations

DUTIES:

* Provide fast, efficient, friendly customer service at their station
* Strict adherence to all health department and state liquor authority rules and LPR employee policies
* Serve as a public relations ambassador of the venue
* Handle all transactions accurately and honestly

So there was unexpected resonance in the choice of that space — now Le Poisson Rouge — for the reunion of “The Stretch Armstrong & Bobbito Show,” which ran from 1990 to 1998 on WKCR-FM (89.9), the Columbia University station, and was the most noteworthy bulwark against that move to commercialism. In the Stretch & Bobbito world, mainstream was a four-letter word.

That that resistance proved largely futile only enhanced the memory of the battle’s intensity. On Thursday night a few hundred flamekeepers — several in vintage T-shirts advertising the radio show — came out to watch a one-night revival (following a one-off radio show in October). The D.J.’s and hosts Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Garcia were joined by a revolving crew of sidekicks, rappers and hangers-on to revisit a time when jeans were baggy, records were vinyl, and borders were heavily policed.

It was a class reunion, featuring not only performances but also the deep, long hugs of people who went through war together and had not seen one another since. Not surprisingly, the night unfolded much as the radio show used to — meandering at the beginning, intense at the middle, fizzling out at the end. There were scads of inside jokes and several videos of old shows, including a blistering freestyle session by Souls of Mischief.

Le Poisson Rouge is most closely identified with the world of new music, but since its founding it has also regularly featured traditional piano recitals. Its first classical music show, in 2008, featured the pianist Simone Dinnerstein playing the music of Bach and George Crumb, and the roster has since included Jonathan Biss in 2009, Marc-André Hamelin in September and, on Monday evening, the charismatic Hélène Grimaud.

The concert had a stylish intimacy. Ms. Grimaud wore a casual top and silky, wide-legged pants, and before playing, she described her love for New York by invoking the Beastie Boys song “An Open Letter to N.Y.C.”

Varsity Letters, New York's sports reading series, is turning five this year. On the first Thursday of almost every month since spring 2006, three sportswriters have read from and talked about their work before a crowd of sports fans, book fans, and people who just wandered in—a format that doesn't exist anywhere else (that we know of—if you're hosting your own version of Varsity Letters in San Francisco, Sao Paolo, or anywhere else, please let us know; we'd like to be friends). Varsity Letters was founded by Dan Shanoff, who more recently has created the sports-info site Quickish. Gelf took over the reins at the end of 2006 and has been running with it since.

More than 100 authors have joined the ranks of Varsity Letters alumni, some of them three, four, or five times over. To celebrate the fifth anniversary of the series, Shanoff and Gelf are hosting more than a dozen friends of the series, including distinguished alumni and a few first-time speakers. Each one will speak for a few minutes about a defining moment in sports. In keeping with the brevity of their remarks, and the even briefer brevity of updates on Quickish, Gelf is forgoing full-length interviews with each, in favor of rapid-fire questionnaires with each—including, for those who haven't answered them before, the vital stats questions we subject all of our authors to.

Self-Titled Streams Francesco Tristano's Idiosynkrasia

As closely aligned as classical and electronic music can be these days, we can’t think of too many artists who’ve been asked to play François K’s Deep Space party and a proper seated gig featuring crossover composers like John Cage and Philip Glass. And yet, that’s where Franceso Tristano’s at this week, as the Baroque-schooled composer/pianist celebrates the release of his Idiosynkrasia record with two very different New York gigs. Different but fitting. After all, Tristano’s recent Carl Craig collaboration was prefaced by studio time with Murcof (Not Classical) and the godfather of dub-techno itself, Moritz Von Oswald (Auricle Bio On).

Metropolis Ensemble Two-Night Stand at LPR Reviewed in NYT

The mixing of acoustic instruments and electronic sounds was not always as easy and natural as it can seem nowadays. Certainly, adventurous composers were drawn to the limitless palette of sounds made possible by recording technology and computers. But not until digital sampling and the versatile laptop computer arrived did it become relatively easy to exploit all the unusual timbres and unnatural juxtapositions promised by electronics.

On Thursday night the Metropolis Ensemble, a resourceful pocket orchestra led by Andrew Cyr, presented “Hallucinations,” a program devoted to works in which acoustics and electronics shared roughly equal status. Smart promotion and novel music — and probably the ensemble’s recent Grammy Award nomination — helped to pack the house at Le Poisson Rouge for an evening consisting almost entirely of previously unheard works.

Pianist Hélène Grimaud featured in the NY Times, plays sold out show at LPR on Monday

Interviewed over lunch on Tuesday, Ms. Grimaud spoke of her recent recovery from another, unrelated series of dire medical issues — a tumor discovered to be stomach cancer, leading, after a delay caused by a bronchial infection, to surgery and chemotherapy — and of another Deutsche Grammophon album, “Resonances,” a program of solo works by Mozart, Berg, Liszt and Bartok, released that day.

It’s called taking the bad with the good. Yet Ms. Grimaud, looking and sounding hardy at 41, was nothing but upbeat.

“I have never felt so good,” she said.

And that is fortunate, for she is up to her old scheduling. Ms. Grimaud, who now calls Weggis, Switzerland, near Lucerne, home, is in New York to play music from the “Resonances” program in the Peoples’ Symphony Concerts series at Town Hall on Sunday afternoon and at Le Poisson Rouge on Monday evening (and — oh, yes — to visit the Wolf Conservation Center in South Salem, N.Y., which she helped found in 1999). Her itinerary since December has included Moscow and St. Petersburg, Beijing, San Francisco, Tokyo and Toronto, in that globe-hopping order.

Ms. Grimaud plays at LPR on Monday night. I hope you have your tickets already, because this show is sold out.

Next week, I'm playing an overlapped, simultaneous concert with Francesco Tristano, this time at Le Poisson Rouge in New York. It's billed as "[ Simultaneo ]." In the advertising it says: "Two concerts at the same time!" A manifestation of remix culture for sure -- it's Girl Talk Classical!
