Rachel Platten is no stranger to the spotlight. After a life changing experience in Trinidad performing, by fluke, in front of 100,000 screaming fans at the 2002 Trinidad Soca Monarch Finals, she returned to her native Boston and recorded her first record, “Trust in Me” The songs on her debut release won her “Best New Artist” and “Vocalist” at the Harvard Advocate Music Awards and went into heavy rotation on college radio. Though a newcomer, she opened for The Strokes, Rusted Root, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, and Marc Ford (of Black Crowes), and performed over 500 shows around the country.
Moving to New York City shortly after, Rachel became a beloved regular on the Village scene, eventually selling out The Cutting Room and Arlene’s Grocery. During this time she worked with several producers, including DJ Logic, Bill Bell (of Jason Mraz and Justin Nozuka fame), and spent time alone in her living room searching for her sound. She finally found a partner in Mark Turrigiano who understood her special combination of pop and soul: The Jackson 5 and Otis Redding meets The Beatles meets Carole King with a twist of…Rachel.
On March 11, headlining Highline Ballroom, backed by her fabulously fun band, Rachel will preview songs from her new album, "Happy Music Songs (and 2 about guys I now hate)" many of which are already fan favorites, such as the catchy “Million Little Reasons” (recently included as the NY Post’s MPFree) and “Seven Weeks” (which will be heard in the upcoming film, “The Good Guy” (premiering at The Tribeca Film Festival this spring, starring Gilmore Girl, Alexis Blidel). Rachel’s performance at the Highline will be a celebration indeed – and it’s only just beginning.
Ian Axel:
Think a PG movie with curse words—that's Ian Axel (yes, that's his real name), a New York-based singer/songwriter and pianist quickly paddling his way up the mainstream. Reminiscent of Ben Folds, Axel's family-fun, piano rock style carries an edge, reminding listeners that we can be of suburban origin, abide by the law, respect women, but still be badass.
