The New York Times on Cameron Carpenter at LPR


The New York Times came by LPR this past Monday to review the performance of organist Cameron Carpenter.

It was clear in Mr. Carpenter’s opening selection, a rhythmically supple account of Coltrane’s “Moment’s Notice,” that he had a feeling for this music. That should not be surprising: organists, unlike most classical instrumentalists, are schooled in improvisation, and Mr. Carpenter has an extroverted performing style well suited to the business of finding the possibilities in a chord progression or a melody.

Time Out New York on Cameron Carpenter


There’s more to organist Cameron Carpenter than his Swarovski-encrusted top and Cuban-heeled shoes (both custom-made), unorthodox transcriptions and semiretired nightclub persona, Shane Turquoise. True, Cameron uniquely blends David Bowie–style showmanship and Laurie Anderson–esque performance art in his shows. But underneath the style is a substance that has led to memorable concerts, whether he’s breaking a pedal in Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center or performing with a live video feed in midtown’s Church of St. Mary the Virgin.
