Review: Maya Beiser at LPR

From The New York Times-

Spain’s Golden Age, an era of peaceable coexistence and cooperation among Jews, Muslims and Christians during the 9th through 15th centuries, has inspired projects by numerous prominent artists. Some, like the great Catalan viol player Jordi Savall (who will perform at Lincoln Center in May), have tried to recreate sounds of the period. “Provenance,” a program the cellist Maya Beiser presented at Le Poisson Rouge on Wednesday night, proposes a modern-day analogue with evocative modern works inspired by historical sources.

Tonight at LPR: Maya Beiser

Maya Beiser is a classically trained cellist, but nobody with even a slight acquaintance with classical music would ever mistake her performance for a traditional one. Beiser attacks the cello the way Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Kobain, and Jimmy Page attacked the guitar--with attitude, playfulness, and rock-and-roll showmanship. The Israeli-born cellist has sought in part to re-create pieces from the classical repertoire rather than reproduce them note-for-note to conform to traditional ideas of how they should sound. Her concerts often include video projections, spoken-word poetry, prerecorded cello music, and elements of rock, electronica, minimalism, and Middle Eastern music.
