REAL ESTATE

Think sundrenched, think sentimental, and—yes—think subtle. On Real Estate’s eponymous debut album, fittingly released by buzz label Woodsist last week, the songs are in no rush. The hooks are there—and enough “uh oh” choruses to have you singing along—but they take their time. –Nylon Magazine

DAVID KARSTEN DANIELS AND FIGHT THE BIG BULL

Singer-Songwriter David Karsten Daniels and nine-piece post-jazz band Fight The Big Bull recently collaborated on an album based on the poetry of Henry David Thoreau.

...Daniels, White and the band mixed and matched sounds to the point where genre became irrelevant. Their twangy ballads segue to polyphonic New Orleans jazz ("Though All the Fates"), songs that build from a beautiful chorale to roots-rock and then an improv jam filled with woody percussion ("October Airs" and "On Fields"), slow burns where a single mantra builds, achingly, over the course of eight minutes ("Each Summer Sound"). There are rock beats, swirling flute, "Penny Lane" trumpet, atonal free-jazz solos, jump cuts which explode into colors — all of which serve well-constructed pop songs ("The Funeral Bell," "Die and Be Buried" and so on).

ON FILLMORE

On Fillmore is duo comprised of upright bassist Darin Gray and drummer Glenn Kotche who create compositions using field recordings in addition to their respective instruments. While their commitments to other projects (Jim O'Rourke, Wilco, and solo work) have limited their time to record together, they have still released four albums and scored several films since forming in 2000. Pitchfork on their latest album, Extended Vacation:

These seven interwoven pieces delight: Accessible but not pedestrian, complex but not esoteric, Extended Vacation feels improvised in spirit, but, in both structure and sound, it reveals two focused, imaginative composers and performers. The melodies and the warped sounds-- a vibraphone blurred into an organ, animal samples sculpted into a symphony, xylophone lines fashioned into music box tunes-- make Extended Vacation the most instantly likable On Fillmore album yet.

THE POSTELLES

The Postelles channel Joe Jackson and Elvis Costello and – more recently – the Arctic Monkeys and the Strokes, building songs from brief guitar stabs and sounding like the wound-up early hours of what will be a long Saturday night on the town. There are elements of both mod and post-punk, but The Postelles have a sneering attitude all their own… –Rolling Stone

NELS CLINE SINGERS

Nels Cline might be best know as the guitarist who replaced Leroy Bach in Wilco, but he has been playing with artists such as Mike Watt and Thurston Moore, as well as pursuing his own solo projects, for decades. From NPR:

Like his pal Bill Frisell or colleague Marc Ribot, Cline owns a style that's as adaptable as it is unusual. Part of what he offers is in line with the school of noise guitar innovated in part by another friend and collaborator, Thurston Moore: Cline relishes the peculiarities of the Fender Jazzmaster, and has a profound fascination with discordant sonics. But his interests and abilities extend far beyond feedback. As a soloist in rock and fusion settings, he avoids blues-rooted cliches; his attack is physical and his phrasing abrupt, often punctuated by shrewd use of the guitar's tremolo arm. Cline's application of pedals and other electronics is so involved that they become instruments unto themselves, yet he can deliver a convincing approximation of cool-toned jazz playing.

LAURIE ANDERSON

Laurie Anderson's 40-year career bucks classification, incorporating performance art, music, spoken word, video, and more. To mention John Zorn, Lou Reed, and Philip Glass only glosses her collaborations with the American avant-garde. She's also crossed over in interesting and unexpected ways, whether voicing a singing tot in The Rugrats Movie, or hitting #2 on the 1981 UK Singles Chart with "O Superman (For Massenet)", a doomsday anthem combining the vocoder with an aria from Le Cid. That angelic, robotic voice is often reprised on Homeland, her first new album in a decade, which fans will welcome as an heir to her definitive performance piece, United States. It's also a perfect starting point; an exquisite state-of-the-union dispatch as only Anderson, America's darkly comic conscience, can provide. –Brian Howe, Pitchfork

Upcoming Post-Rock Shows at LPR

Here's what's coming up at LPR in post-rock.

MATMOS and SO PERCUSSION

Recording under the name Matmos, M.C. Schmidt and Drew Daniel have always been known for their unique choices for sound sources, which over their career has included, among other things, amplified crayfish nerve tissue, human hair, plastic surgery, frozen steam thawing in the sun, latex clothing, and a steel guitar recorded in a sewer. They recently teamed up with the percussion quartet So Percussion, who they will also be performing with at LPR on June 9th, to record Treasure State, which will be released on June 13th. In the meantime you can download “Treasure,” the quasi-title track from the album, over here!

TORTOISE

Formed in Chicago in 1990, Tortoise is often considered one of the most influential post-rock bands of the last two decades. Unlike many of their indie-rock contemporaries in the mid-‘90s, they favored Krautrock, dub, jazz, and minimalism over more traditional rock and punk influences. Also notable was their choice of instrumentation, which often included two bassists and three percussionists switching between drums, vibraphones, and marimbas. They released Beacons of Ancestorship, their first album in five years, in June of 2009. Check out the music video for “Prepare Your Coffin,” one of the tracks off of that album, below.

AKRON XTENDED FAMILY

"Akron/Family's hushed left field pastoralism invite comparison with the loose US scene of folk-derived weirdness ... Immaculately interwoven electronics and the care with which each beautifully recorded track unfolds recall Chicago post-rock ..." (The Wire, 2005).


Akron/Family is a folk-influenced experimental rock band. Their records feature everything from field recordings and static to guitars and glockenspiel, while their live performances rely heavily on improvisation and three-part harmonies. At their performance at LPR as a part of Vision Festival XV, they will be joined on stage by jazz musicians William Parker and Hamid Drake. Be the First to Hear the New Nels Cline Album

Nels Cline has been in a band here and there. A few of them you might have even heard of, such as Wilco. All in all the man has played guitar on over 150 albums. His new group, The Nels Cline Singers, will be releasing their album Initiate, a double disc affair, on April 13. Fortunately for those of us lacking the patience to make it another 6 days NPR is streaming both discs right now. You can preview the album in its entirety here, up until the release date.
