Dan Barber & the Mirror Vision Ensemble
File under: food&music, classical

Join chef Dan Barber in a conversation on the food sustainability movement, and the way in which the arts can foster its presence. Barber’s philosophy combines old world farming wisdom with new agricultural technologies in order to create food that is at once delicious, innovative, healthy and environmentally responsible. Dan Barber now takes his sustainability advocation a step further by explaining the positive impact the arts can have on spreading these ideas to a wider audience. As Dan explains, “The issue of food and agriculture sustainability is currently attracting a tsunami of attention. Art can play a role in the next level of this movement.”

To demonstrate this unique collaboration, The Mirror Visions Ensemble performs sneak peek excerpts from know thy farmer™—a cantata by Richard Pearson Thomas set to a number of texts drawn from the menus of Blue Hill at Stone Barns Restaurant—which will receive its official world premiere on Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at Merkin Concert Hall.

Visit: Blue Hill Farm

The Mirror Visions Ensemble was founded in 1992 by Tobé Malawista, Richard Lalli and Scott Murphree. The initial interest, which continues to this day, was the back-to-back performance of multiple settings of a single text. This led to programs built around favorite poets: Shakespeare, Verlaine, Dickinson and Heine, in particular. Commissioning rapidly became an integral part of the ensemble’s mission, and, under Ms. Malawista’s guidance, The Mirror Visions Ensemble has commissioned more than 70 vocal chamber music works from 14 composers including Christopher Berg, Tom Cipullo, Russell Platt, Richard Pearson Thomas, and Yehudi Wyner.
