Radio Happy Hour Mixtape: Vol. 1

In celebration of their one-year anniversary, Radio Happy Hour put together a mixtape of some of their best musical performances from the past year. Norah Jones will be doing a special intimate concert at (le) Poisson Rouge on September 24th in celebration of her forthcoming album The Fall. The very limited number of tickets available for this show are free and only available to LPR Members. (Not a member? Find out how to become one here.)

Multiple Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter Norah Jones has announced the title and release date of her upcoming album, The Fall, her fourth studio album which will be released by EMI’s Blue Note Records on November 17.

Jones has taken a new direction on the The Fall, experimenting with different sounds and a new set of collaborators, including Jacquire King, a noted producer and engineer who has worked with Kings of Leon, Tom Waits, and Modest Mouse among others. Jones enlisted several songwriting collaborators, including Ryan Adams and Okkervil River’s Will Sheff, as well as her frequent partner Jesse Harris. King also helped Jones put together a new group of musicians to perform on the album, including drummers Joey Waronker (Beck, R.E.M.) and James Gadson (Bill Withers), keyboardist James Poyser (Erykah Badu, Al Green), and guitarists Marc Ribot (Tom Waits, Elvis Costello) and Smokey Hormel (Johnny Cash, Joe Strummer). The audience at (le) Poisson Rouge on September 24th will get an early preview of some songs which will appear on The Fall.

"Yes, something on the order of 900 or so people filled the dark Bleecker Street basement club for a 2 p.m. Saturday show that featured singer-songwriter cum actress Norah Jones as guest on a modern take on an old-fashioned radio show. It was just like radio in that it had a cast, sound effects, micophones and a live audience. But there was no radio broadcast. The show was recorded as podcast.

Norah gamely participated in the first of a series of three planned Radio Happy Hour show this summer. answering questions from host Sam Osterhout, playing a few songs on an acoustic guitar, listening to Sam do a slightly absurd trivia quiz to a member of the audience and joining the cast for an amusingly silly radio drama called Terror in Teaneck.

It turned out to be a perfectly pleasant way to spend an hour or with LPR’s brunch menu and some drinks."

(Ok, so there may not have been quite 900 people there. Maybe it felt like that many.)

Radio Happy Hour, Episode One: Success!

Everyone had a great time yesterday for the first ever Radio Happy Hour with host Sam Osterhout and special guest Norah Jones. There are some great pics, including the one above, at Massive Photography.

Norah Jones, born on March 30th 1979 in New York City, is one of the most popular contemporary jazz and jazz-influenced singers of our time. She was a member of Wax Poetic before her debut album Come Away With Me.

Her debut album Come Away With Me sold 22 million copies worldwide and won 5 Grammy Awards in 2003.

Her second album, Feels Like Home, with folk tendency, is the highest-selling album in the history of Blue Note Records with over a million copies sold within the first week. Norah Jones was listed among the most influential people of 2004 by the Time Magazine.

On January 30, 2007 Norah Jones released her third album, Not Too Late - a collection of 13 original songs.

The daughter of Beatles-influencing sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar, Jones doesn’t closely follow any particular genre, rather she brings her unique jazzy flavor to songs with roots in country, folk, Americana, and modern light jazz and pop.
